Normally I would post a new movie review today but because I wasn’t in the mood for Kick-Ass or The Jonses, I have nothing new to report!
So I decided to take a look back at some of the worst, most painful movies I’ve ever seen. Trust me, these are hours of my life I will never get back. And that makes me sad.
Let’s take a look:
Because I Said So
I love Diane Keaton…in Annie Hall. I wanted to love the premise of this movie, meddling mom helps her youngest daughter (Mandy Moore) meet a guy but Keaton was so over the top, annoying, screeching and obnoxious that I wanted to pierce my eardrum. And the last scene of the movie sealed why this was so awful.
Stepbrothers
I know this came out when Will Ferrel could do no wrong and I loved him and John C. Reilly in Talladega Nights but this was just awful. I don’t mind gross humor but this was just gross. I laugh at anything and I barely laughed at this at all. Maybe I would like it more if I was a guy.
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
The trailer for this movie lied. Flat out. What I saw in the theater previews and then saw on DVD rental for this movie were two TOTALLY different films. It was so bad, I got up and started cooking while it was playing. I could barely stand to finish it. Jeremy Piven, you did real wrong here.
Donnie Darko
I honest to god did not understand this movie. Friends adore it and my brother loved it but honestly, I just didn’t get it. It was a little dark and alternative for me and while I tried to keep an open mind, I just could not get through this. No thank you.
Rumor Has It
I had a feeling this would end up badly when Rob Reiner stepped in to direct this two weeks into shooting because the original director backed out. And I definitely know why. I love Mark Ruffalo but Jennifer Aniston in this movie…is awful. And whiney and screechy. There is one scene with Shirley MacLaine and Mena Suvari that was so awful, I put the TV on mute.
The Whole Ten Yards
Great example of a great movie (The Whole Nine Yards) that had to be made into a sequel and was made into one that was so awful, I actually fell asleep in the theater. Matthew Perry and Bruce Willis were great in the original but both are reduced to bumbling, screeching, intolerable versions of their original characters in this movie. I really hope they just did it for the cash.
What are some of the worst movies you’ve ever seen?

i totally agree about the goods, that movie was so blah, i couldn’t believe i saw it in theaters.
as for other movies i cannot stand, the wild wild west was the first movie i ever straight out hated. also wasn’t a fan of maid in manhattan, errr no thanks. man there are so many but i’m drawing a blank on the rest right now, haha.
One of the worst movies I have EVER seen — and one that did well at the box office — was Master and Commander with Russell Crowe. Ugh, ugh, UGH. I think it’s the only one I’ve ever written a Netflix review about because it was just that terrible.
Recently Brian and I attempted to watch Up in the Air and we had to shut it off about halfway through because we were bored to tears.
My worst movies? Anaconda, Eyes Wide Shut, Clockwork Orange (I HATE hate hate this movie – it’s so incredibly unpleasant)… that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. I don’t watch movies in the theater unless they get at least 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, so that’s currently saving me from (most of) the bad ones. :)
I love Donnie Darko! It’s so weird and trippy and always leaves me thinking. I wanted Because I Said So to be great, and it was just meh. I hate when that happens.
because i said so is a guilty pleasure of mine, but the only reason i like it b/c i thought mandy moore looked gorgeous and i want every single outfit she wears. her house/apartment was to die for too! i agree…diane keaton is over the top ANNOYING though.
I loved Stepbrothers. :-) But I can see how people wouldn’t like it. The funny parts were few and far between, but if you see it several times it becomes really quotable and gets funnier.
Also, Donnie Darko makes absolutely no sense to me, but I still f-ing LOVE it. Maybe I love it BECAUSE it makes no sense. I don’t know.
Hated, hated, hated Donnie Darko! We’re definitely in the minority, though.
I can agree with almost all of these but Donnie Darko nooooo! One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. It’s so beautiful! And so well-directed. A parallel universe opens up in the wormhole and Donnie is the only person that can exist in both universes, and if he doesn’t go back to his bed and allow himself to be killed the night the engine falls then the real universe will be totally wiped out, so he dies to preserve life for everyone else. And the soundtrack ROCKS, hopefully you can give me that.
Donnie Darko was horrible. I didn’t get it either. I think I only watched about 15 minutes of it, but seriously it was so stupid. I liked Because I Said So but mostly because I thought the guy she ended up with was just so freaking adorable.
