Review: Inception

When I can’t find something about a movie’s plotline, I think one of two things: 1) it sucks and studios are trying to release it under the radar or 2) it’s too complicated to even explain.

The buzz around Inception for months has been “what is this movie about?” That was a red flag for me. How could NO ONE know what this is about except for those close to it? But after I saw a few tweets from friends that saw a sneak peek (jealous!) earlier this week, they loved it. And the reviews so far have been great too.

So I was a good girl, avoided all articles and went to see it tonight. And let me say this. Wow.

Movie: Inception

Rating: PG-13

Release date: July 16, 2010

Everyday Adventures grade: A+

Summary: Seriously, I’m not going to ruin this for you. I will just say this: Leo and friends play some mind games.

My thoughts: Holy sh*tballs this movie was amazing. Blew my mind. No joke. I’ve only give one other movie an A+ review (The Young Victoria, love) and this absolutely warranted that rating. Christopher Nolan is an amazing director who knows how to shoot a beautiful movie and command the best out of his performers. He did this in Memento and The Dark Knight where he got stellar performances out of Guy Pierce and Heath Ledger respectively and he does it again here.

Really, the movie is so visually beautiful that you can get lost in it. Scenes that rotate between slow motion and fast pace keep you on your toes and really soak in the awe of how it was filmed. I’m MORE than curious how a few of the scenes were shot because it was unbelievable to imagine. Nolan is a great storyteller too, bending your mind while tugging at your heartstrings and making characters righteous but flawed and morally questionable but good inside.

There were a few plot twists I didn’t see coming and didn’t fully understand, but I went along for the ride and am glad I did because it was worth it.

And the cast here is stellar. Baby face Leo is really becoming a solid leading man. He’s shown this in his last few movies, including the Departed, Blood Diamond and Shutter Island, but here he is strong, handsome (hey there pretty man in the tie) and tortured. Ellen Page and Jordan Gordon-Levitt also move into more leading woman/man roles, ditching the indie hipster looks for GQ-inspired matureness. And on Joseph, I do NOT mind. Both were really strong in this movie as well. There were also great smaller roles by Michael Caine and Tom Beringer too.

I don’t want to give too much away because I’m really looking forward to hearing what others thought of it as well but this was a really great, challenging, confusing and awe-inspiring movie.

Verdict: Um, I think it’s pretty clear I loved it. Go see it!

  1. I LOVED this movie. My husband dragged me to it, but I LOVED it. I think I got it the first time (everyone says you need to see it twice to get it), I saw it a second time and still had the same conclusion. There was a big ARG! at the end of the movie in the entire theatre both times I saw it at the end there! LOVED IT!

oh and The Young Victoria was just beautiful. everything about it was beautiful. sounds so cheesey, but i can’t think of a better word to describe it!

  3. kimmy says:

god, i love Leo. partially due to his teen heart throb days, but mostly b/c he’s just so damn talented! if Leo is in it, you know its going to be a pretty good movie. same w/ Christopher Nolan..if he has anything to do with it, it will be good. i can’t wait to see this!

  4. Amanda says:

I’ve heard such good things about this movie in the past few days (oh, Twitter). I probably won’t see it in theaters as I’m kind of on a “don’t spend any money” kick. But it’s added to my Netflix queue so I’ll see it someday :)

    Also.

ADORED the Young Victoria. So much. There aren’t words.

  5. Grace says:

I saw it today and had a great time. For me it was not an A+ but that has more to do with the way the action scenes were done. Overall I was very pleased.

  6. Caroline says:

I honestly think this might be the best movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Loved it!

Though just to prove it’s not for everyone…I dragged my boyfriend to it and I don’t feel bad only because it was so damn good, but he didn’t like it…too much thinking for him, or too confusing, whatever. :( Which isn’t what I thought at all…other than the beginning scenes which you just had to go with, I thought it was remarkably simple to follow, but not entirely easy, if that makes sense.

  7. poodlegoose says:

Amazing movie. Really. Few movies have done enough to blow me away, and Christopher Nolan did just that. Now, I just need to go see it again so I can get past the audience’s comments from the last viewing (think: oohh, alfred! and oooh, he’s not really dead?! and ooh, juno! ugh).

  8. Jen says:

I have seen all of Leo’s latest movies. I really liked “The Departed” and “Shutter Island” (it was filmed in the area and I was fascinated with it).

I loved Inception. The ending captured it for me. I was a LOST fan and I think the endless guessing was what kept me with it and the ending was certianly that. I think it was real.

Leo has totally gotten better with age I think.

  9. Maki says:

Oooo, I can’t wait to see it now! I have heard great reviews from all over the place. Did you see it with 3D? I agree, Leo has become a great leading man – I loved him in Blood Diamond as well as Body of Lies. I havent seen “Shatter Island” which I know I should…

I trust your review and I’ll go see it (JT is coming home next week!)

    xoxo
